Lucky Shrike but no Smew

I ventured north today into the heart of Scotland with the hope of picking up a couple of increasingly scarce winter visitors. I dipped on the first (a drake Smew) at Nisbit near Jedburgh but had Goosander and a nice Goldeneye fly over. (There were also 9 Whooper Swans and a handful of Tree Sparrows, both of which were a nice surprise.) I then drove west to the Cloich Hills near Eddleston and made my way to the Don Coyote Outdoor Centre (a hut in the middle of a forest!). I pulled up just in time to see another birder leaving. He hadn't seen the bird despite searching for two hours. Great! I had nothing else to do so I parked and scanned the surrounding habitat. Nothing at first. I checked again and lo and behold - there it was, perched openly on top of a dead tree! I grabbed my camera and set off across the rough ground. This got me a little closer to the bird, but it didn't hang around and whilst I managed to relocate it much further away, it quickly vanished from there too and was not seen again. I had to settle, frustratingly, for distant record shots. Still, a nice bird to see and I was chuffed to be the one to relocate it after a two-hour spell of absence.
