Rare Sea-duck and Geese near Edinburgh

With nothing to see near home and an imminent storm coming up from the south, I needed to get away and headed north in search of rarities and scarcities in Scotland. Longniddry was my first port of call; nothing rare here but there was a nice selection of seabirds including Long-tailed Ducks (close in and displaying), c. 20-30 Slavonian Grebes, Red-throated Diver, Red-breasted Merganser, Common and Velvet Scoter, Eider etc. I then worked my way west, and got to Fisherow without too much bother; better still, 3 other birders were already at the end of the pier looking at the bird I'd come to see: the rare White-winged Scoter. Views were excellent through the scope and by driving further east a little, c. 1/2 mile (and down Edinburgh Road to the beach), I was able to get some record shots of this mega-rarity, one I'd only seen a couple of times before (3rd from left in the photo below). Finally, it was on to Jawcraig Farm, just north of Slamannan, near Falkirk. I'd been here before and failed, and I was in danger of doing the same (as well as getting the car grounded/stranded in mud on the increasingly undrivable track running west from the main road, signposted National Shooting Centre). Annoyingly, I had no need to go as far as I did along the track and spotted the birds in question on my way back: my first Taiga Bean Geese for c.15 years. (The last time I'd seen this species was at Buckenham Marshes/Cantley Beet Factory, and they are apparently no longer guaranteed here. So, this flock near Falkirk is now my best/only bet for this species. Views weren't great because I was looking into the sun (late afternoon), but I got good views through the telescope and also bagged a bonus in the form a nice ringtail Hen Harrier (as well as Sparrowhawk, Buzzard and Kestrel). I also spotted a Buzzard-sized greyish raptor on a post (which, later in flight, resembled a large Peregrine); could this have been a Gyrfalcon...? Well, when someone else finds one near here in the next few days, remember I wrote this! The one that got away...
